Where you been lady?

Do you remember the children's book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst? It seems that poor Alexander just can't catch a break as we follow him through his day that is peppered with one negative or inconvenient event after another, leaving him wishing he could just "move to Australia". Well, I haven't moved to Australia + all of the events of late have not been negative ones... well, long story longer, here's the last couple of weeks in review...Since I'm now finished with work at the college for the summer, I decided to join a gym. Exercising at home in the playroom was getting tougher in the warmer weather, and honestly, I was looking foward to taking advantage of the free daycare the gym offered. I began running and my knee began to feel a little sore...then the opposite ankle {likely because I was overcompenstaing for the knee} started to bother me a bit. I'm still going to the gym + my ailments are ailing me less as I get stronger, however, I can help but think of that expression: No good deed goes unpunished? Yeah, slight injury as a reward for trying to get healthy was a bit of a headache {among other aches} for a couple of weeks there...
Then right around this same time that I was first gym'ing it up, I realized that I had not yet started on the preparations for the Fif's birthday party {this upcomming Sunday!}. Having a couple of boys {+ knowing how they "party"}, I really look foward to planning + throwing the Fif's beautiful, sweet, girlie parties each year. Knowing that these days are numbered + that my baby girl will not always allow me the creative carte blanche I enjoy now, I've had to plan, order + craft with haste to bring this years Honey Bee Birthday Party to life. More on that this week... Planning + preparing a party for 12 little folk in your home isn't the worlds most difficult task, however this is not the only event that has been about of late. In the last two weeks, my Tinest of Guys cut his 2 top teeth + began WALKING, the Fif has been finishing up the little classes she attends and in addition to my Big Guy finishing up the school year, I've been scrambling to help the Monks catch up on his requirements for his Bobcat + Tiger badges so he can get said badges at the last meeting before Scouts breaks for the summer. That's not including the 4 birthday parties + a few bbq's we've been invited to attend along the way. Phew! Right around now, I'm feeling mighty grateful that I am done with work for the year...

And speaking of work, during the last weeks, a couple of different college teaching opportunities have reached my ears. Both positions sounded closer to full time {although I'm not exactly sure how FT is defined in terms of hours} + would mean close to an hour commute each way. With all that has been going on, you might think I was completely mad to even consider either of the positions. However, those of you who stay at home {or those working smaller PT jobs} and are living on a shoe string budget {like we do!} know how alluring the idea of another income can be! I'm torn between trying to squeeze in one more year as a SAHMama/adjunct professor + just taking the plunge into one of these jobs and making it work. I'm wondering whether {literally} doubling our income and alleviating many a financial worry will actually make me a better mama than the slightly financially anxious SAHMama I can be at times now? And finances aside, after years of schooling, gosh, how incredibly fufilling it would be to be able to build my resume with this kind of experience! Yet I wonder, will the hours I'm away from home be long + childcare too expensive for it to be worth it...or will the FT/ heavier adjunct teaching load be based on classes taught {not hours per se} and work rather seamlessly into our lives? So many things to consider. I've been reworking my resume to send out and will have to let the universe point me in the right direction on this one..

And last but not least, the icing on the proverbial cake...sunburn. With very little littles, I've spent most of my beach time under an umbrella the last couple of summers. This year, all 3 of my kiddos are on the move, so I thought it might behoove me to get a bit of a body base tan {I always do alot of sunscreen on this freckled face...if not a hat as well}. And what is the expression: "If you can't loose it, Tan It!" I have to admit that I was slightly enamored with the idea of seeing a slightly slimmer me a bit less pasty in the tummy + leg regions. So after being sorely spoiled by a week of PERFECT spring like weather {2 weeks ago now}, it was followed by a week of rain...straight rain. When the sun finally came out again it was instant summerand so I thought I might lay out in my back yard? Growing up, my Irish heritage gave me some cute sunny freckles + my Italian heritage has always done me right when it came to a nice summertime tan. But alas, the sun we have now is a very different sun than the one I grew up with. After just a small window of time in said deamon sun, I had managed to burn the back side of my body so feircely that I was actually sick from it! {Yeah, I think that is called SUN POISONING} I'm usually wonderful about the sunscreen having kiddos + caring for my own tattoos...I just don't know what I was thinking! I suppose some lessons need to be learned the hard way? So right about know in the story, Iceland {forget Australia!} is looking like a really great place to disappear to! I don't like being off my "A-Game" with a sore knee or a sunburn. I don't like being unsure about what the next move should be in terms of these working opportunities; a decision that would mean a big change in the life we've been used to living for many years. I don't like feeling rushed when it comes to doing things that I really enjoy + want to give my full attention to, like planning a party. And I don't like that all of this was likely compounded by the fact that I was deluded into thinking that just because I was done with teaching, that there was some break of sorts on the horizon? Silly Rabbit...

But what I really don't like is being negative. It's good to remember what Alexander's Mama tells him in the story I mentioned earlier, "some days {or in my case, weeks} are like that {slightly inconvenient}...even in Australia". Truth be told, I have what I like to call, "White Collar Problems"... I mean, instead of being bummed about a sore knee or not having as much time as I'd like to plan a party, I'm grateful that I can even afford to pay the dues to go to a gym and to buy all of what I want to to throw a party. Instead of stressing about work opportunities, I'm grateful to even have such options, especially in an economy where so many are without work. My family is healthy + safe. We have a lovely home to live in + good food to eat. I know that life gets much more complicated than this, but I think reminding ourselves of the basics; the things that we really can't live without, well, it can recenter us...ME. Because in the end, all things work out...atleast in these instances I mentioned above. I have been offered another class for the fall semester where I currently teach and have a meeting with another college with the possibility of teaching a class or two with them. This scenario would be just about PERFECT. My sunburn is all better + my knee is feeling good. I ran my first 6mi. in 60 min. in, oh, 5 years!?! Yes, I have brought 3 lives into this world, yet I am totally STOKED over my success with running...? And last but not least, everything is comming together bee-utifully for the Fif's Bee-Day Soiree this weekend. I'm putting together a sneak-peek post for tomorrow + will share the big day next week.

I'm betting that a few of you can relate? Well, chin up friends, things have a way of working out! Wishing you all wonderful things!

Book Club Meeting: David Sedaris

Last week, my mama's book club met on our latest pick, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk by David Sedaris. I may have been one of only a few book club members who had not read Sedaris in the past, so naturally having heard he was quite brilliant + very funny, I was anxious to read this newest collection of short stories. Brilliant? Without a doubt. Funny? Well, this particular book was more of a black comedy. Sedaris used animals to tell tales that could have easily have been applied to our human lives. For example the Baboon hairdresser, forever putting her foot in her mouth as she does the Cat's hair. Or the Chipmunk, who is left spending the rest of her days wondering after the Squirrel she had dated...her family having forced the issue of her severing ties with him because they "weren't in the same league". Each story was really a "Call Out" of sorts...probably Sedaris' observations of the worst of human kind. Our pretentions, prejudices...our flaws. Most of the stories were kind of on the creepy side and I found that the stories where I could identify with one of the "animals" were a bit more haunting?
*************
A worthwhile read...the short stories make it an ideal bathroom book. Just don't be surprised if you find yourself shaking your head in thought each time you leave the loo!
Happy Reading.

The next book club pick will be Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte...so looking foward to this AND to the girls night out to the recently released movie!

What's in the book pile right now?...

*************
So here are some of the books that are currently in my book pile...

Ofcourse, there is the obvious David Sedaris book club pick { I have yet to begin it...but I am looking foward to it all the same...as the author is quite brilliant}.

And then there are these other few books, the first of which was given to me at Christmas time...

...and then there are these next two that I picked up on Amazon.com....

I am particularly fond of The Encyclopedia of the Exquisite by J. K. Jenkins + Let's Bring Back by L. M. M. Blume. In additon to putting together a wildly interesting book of wonders from years past...well, I thought Blume hits the nail on the head particularly well when she talks about us nostalgic types, who on a regular basis are left to endure the extermination of our "sepia drenched outlooks" by the world's absorption in all things "faster, newer & better". I've so enjoyed learning about {or being reminded of} things, activities + traditions that I had lost track of; the elegant little indulgences that enrich our lives. I'm so looking foward to my quest to incorporate more of these things into my modern life. A challenge? I prefer to think of it as a bit of Carpe Diem; Inspiration!

And this last book, Bike Snob, is a little something I picked up for my Mister around Valentine's Day...since he is, without a doubt, a complete bike snob. {Sorry honey!} Such a fun + witty little book... I've found myself cracking up while reading just a passage here + there. A must have for anyone who is...well, a bike snob!

*************

So with that I bid you all happy shopping + reading. There is nothing better, in my ever so humble opinion, that a great something to read at your fingertips...especially in hardcover. After all, what can be more wholesome than a book? Shop on my friends, shop on!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Vegan Chocolate Orange Cupcakes

I think I mentioned that Santa had brought me a couple of new Vegan cookbooks for Christmas, yes? And I think I had also mentioned that this girl here spent most of last weeks snow days in doors with the babe, yes? Well, if that isn't the perfect opportunity to do some baking, then I don't know what! So my first attempt: Vegan Chocolate Cupcakes {perfection, if I say so myself} with Vegan Orange {flavored with OJ, not colored} icing. I need to work on the thickness of my icing...too much OJ, I think. But they tasted amazing...I ate 5.

a good read

Ok, don't laught too hard, but I must confess that I participate in a "townie mommy" book club. At first I was a cynic and assumed that myself and most of the mamas in the club would not have loads in common {besides living in town + being able to reproduce}. But I have to admit that this was not the case! Over the years I have met lots of different women, read a number of great books + had a great time at the meetings chatting about the book {and anything else that came up} over a glass of wine.
***************
The book club does not meet in the summer + I was in need of a bit of a mind vacation via book, so during the last weeks of August, I picked up the series of 3 books by Stieg Larsson. While I usually like my murder mysteries to be more soft core, like Murder, She Wrote, I figured I'd give the books a try anyway. The first book, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, was a little tough to get into but before long I was hooked into the story...by the end of the week I was onto the second book { pic. above}, which I tore through in just a few days. Disturbing, yes, but that is apparently the jist of these murder mystery type books?
***************
I have not started the last book yet, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, but I have it. There is nothing like a good book to give your brain a rest from the hamster wheel it can be at times. Maybe during the winter break from teaching?
*************
And just for laughs, in the couple of weeks since I typed this post and hit publish, I have actually taken over the role of Book Club Coordinator fort the mommy group. Freaking hillarious, I know. The queen bee of book clubs was looking for a break + while I don't exactly have loads of extra time on my hands at present, I hated to see the group go under. So now I'm the book club queen bee! LAUGH HARD NOW. I just have to send out a few emails every so often...maybe host a meeting at my house {by default} if I can't get someone else to volunteer. I can handle that.
The next book we will be reading is “Make Me An Offer” by Jessica Dee Rohm. This book will actually be a "meet the author" event at a restaurant in town mid October. Sadly, most of us mama's will not have been relieved by the time the event starts at 5:30...but we will hopefully still meet for a little wine and chatting at someone's house anyway? I'm still working it out...I hope the book is good!
Happy reading!

yard sale wrap skirt

While my computer is still out for repair, I remembered that I had this post prepared...I hope I don't loose anymore friends while I am away! xo

I was looking back over blog post from my last blog recently + thought that I would share some of what I had been crafting/ sewing/ making just last summer. One of my favourite {and most ambitious} sewing projects had been this Yard Sale Wrap skirt, which incidently, I did wear for my town's town wide yard sale. This skirt was just perfect for my newly pregnant + ever changing form. { Baby Liam will still a secret when this photo was taken}
I used a pattern from the book Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross. The skirt did take me longer than a weekend to make, but it is one of those things that once you have made it once, the next one will be super simple. This book is full of great patterns that I can't wait to try out! *Note: I have found that the patterns do run a little small, so you may need to adjust the measurements a bit.

************

I remember reading Soulemama at the time + she had mentioned that she rarely had the 3+ yards of fabric necessary for this particular skirt just kicking around the house. I began schemeing and decided to give the skirt a go usung alternating pannels of coordinating fabrics. I cut the pattern a bit more narrow in the width and shorter in the length to accomodate for the way I had folded the fabric to cut it. I was still able to add the 2 extra pannels I needed, added my button hole at the waist band and extended the belt, all with just 3 yards of fabric! Sewing on a budget? Yes, it can be done!!
Somewhere not too long after I made these, my pregnancy morning sickness kicked in with a vengance and it took a good year before I could even think about a sewing machine without feeling a little green around the gills. I am pretty sure that I am over that now! So while o have not done any big sewing projects of late, I still enjoy wearing these skirts... And seeing these photos from last year is just so inspiring... Maybe some te infront of the sewing machine will be a good replacemt for the computer, until it returns? Sure beats posting with an itouch! Happy week friends!

Spick + Span

So here is the fun little book I came accross the weekend before last. Published circa 1939, the binding reads Safe and Healthy Living and at first I thought it may have been part of a series of books. This is actually one of two books, the second being The Health Parade {I would love to get my hands on that book!} Upon further investigation, I saw that the book is actually broken into Units, each of them addressing various aspects of a child's life, such as school, keeping well, taking care of eyes, nose, ears + teeth, and careful children at home.

The illustrations are simple + sweet. It is telling of the time that in the illustrations where the children appear to be in school or are asking an adult some question, they are always speaking to a woman figure. I particularly like the list: Happy + Healthy Children Eat + Drink Good Things, which includes things like drinking 4 glasses of milk a day and that happy +healthy children like brown cereals, eat their meat and potatoes for dinner + take cod liver oil! Ugh. I used to do the liquid flax seed oil...it was not exactly easy, but I was a committed vegan back when!

Just a fun little something I thought you might enjoy!

father's day gifts...

I know it is a bit after the fact, but I had not wanted the wonderful gifts I found for my mister for father's day to be out done by our outing to Medieval Times!
Sooo...here they are!
I had been wanting to pick up this book for a while...and this mug is my best find yet this summer! I know there are many like this one, however, I was quite partial to the saying thatis somewhat lopsidedly placed on the back.

This mug may have been intended as a shaving mug, however since there is not an inner ledge {a distinguishing characteristic of many shaving mugs}, I'm sure it will be used for drinking. I can't think of a better gift for a coffee fanatic...and father of THREE!
***************
But in the end, I think the cast iron pan my mother gave him won as the favourite purchased gift this holiday. {The gifts the kiddos make are always his most favourite.}

It is my rule {one of very few}, to only give gifts that I would like to receive. This works out particularly well for me when the recipient of the gift lives in this house!
