a tiny vacation

This past weekend we took a bit of a road trip to the most southern point in NJ...oh yeah, exit zero, Cape May. My family rents a house there each summer and each summer we take a day trip to visit the zoo + fun little shops. This year, with three little ones in tow, we thought it might be more fun if we could spend the night....

We had a wonderful family evening at the bay side beach that the house sits on, watching the sun setting + the dolphins jumping through the water. Instead of taking a caravan of children + adults through all of the stores the following day, my mother and I escaped alone for a bit in the morning, leaving the kiddos to frolic and play at the shore with the men folk {who had almost as little interest in shopping as the children}. In the afternoon when we arrived at the Zoo, it was brutally hot, so we made it a short outing so as to sepnd the rest of the day at the beach house before heading home. No one complained at that idea!

It has been a long + rather busy few weeks, so I hope no one will think it is shallow of me when I say that my favourite part of my tiny vacation was my outing to visit the antique stores + other various shops with my mama. It was so nice to be in shops, browsing about, without any children to mind. I came accross some most wonderful treasures; I'll be sure to post more on my book find, Spick and Span {1939} soon! However, what I enjoyed most about my antiquing was happening accross so many items that I grew up seeing in my home and the homes of my grandparents! "How fortunate for me!", I thought. For not everyone is raised to have such good taste or such a knack for finding the beautiful items in the rough!

Yes, it was the tinsiets of trips, but ever so lovely! I'm quite looking foward to making a pot of one of the new loose teas I picked up...and daydreaming a bit about our wonderful time.
How was your weekend?

  1. We also spent a portion of our weekend at the zoo. It was lovely, marmallow's first trip. She was most infatuated with the butterfly house. lil' b's favorites were the snake house (also a favorite of mine) and the rhinoceroses. We never manage to see any gorillas at the enclosure.

This is our beach weekend, also at my parents. Can't wait!

PS, I know what you mean about the escapes with Mom. I love doing that as well. I think I like the little reminders that she and I can be friends now, and let a little of that parent-child relationship fall away.
